Martin Scorsese directed this movie. He's done classics like "Cape Fear," "Casino" and "Taxi Driver" to modern pics, such as "The Departed", "Gangs of New York.", etc The problem is even legendary directors will occasionally push out a movie that looks good, but just doesn't hold up when you watch it. "Shutter Island" seems to be Scorsese's required bad film.
"Shutter Island" is the story of Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), a federal marshall who's investigating the disappearance of a mental patient from an extremely secure hospital. While Daniels is there to solve the case, he also has his own personal motivation for being there and a drive for vengeance. As he begins investigating the island, he starts to uncover things he wasn't supposed to find.
I went into this movie with high expectations. Leonardo DiCaprio really is a great actor in most of his films.
The acting is all great (Ben Kingsley steals every scene he's in as the hospital seer and the settings and cinematography are beautiful. The settings are all dark, scary and help the mystery and suspense of the story which in my opinion do little to enhance the pic. The film never really grabbed me and blew me away, but did manage to hold my attention, though the last scene is great.
While I can't give anything away, there is a big twist ending to this film that, if you pay attention to the little things, you'll see coming a mile off. I figured out the end of the movie in the first half hour, which sucked because I enjoy being surprised during a film. DiCaprio does his best work at the end when the story climaxes. It's a fun scene to watch.
Beyond the somewhat hollow story and overall impact of the movie, it turned out OK. I'd advise renting this when it comes out, but if you like suspense and a decent (if a bit boring) thriller, "Shutter Island" may be right up your alley.
